Are you curious about the world of target shooting? Do you want to try a sport that combines focus, precision, and discipline in a safe and welcoming environment? Getting started is easier than you might think, and a Devon County Small-bore Rifle Association (DCSRA) affiliated club is the perfect place to begin your journey.
Step 1: Find a Local Club and Get in Touch
The DCSRA is comprised of 21 affiliated clubs throughout Devon, ranging from large facilities with extensive outdoor ranges to friendly village clubs. The first and most important step is to find a club near you and make contact. Our clubs are always happy to welcome new faces and answer your questions. Although some may have waiting lists, You can find a list of our member clubs on the DCSRA Our Clubs page, along with contact details. Don't be afraid to send an email or make a phone call—the community is incredibly supportive and eager to help new members get started.
Step 2: The Probationary Period
Due to strict UK firearms laws, you can't simply walk onto a range and start shooting. All Home Office-approved clubs, including those in the DCSRA, require new members to undergo a probationary period. This is not a barrier, but an essential part of ensuring the safety of everyone on the range.
During this time, you will receive expert instruction from a qualified instructor, coach or experienced club member. They will guide you through the fundamentals of safe gun handling, range etiquette, and the basics of marksmanship. You will be provided with a club rifle and ammunition, so there's no need to own any equipment at this stage. This period typically lasts for a minimum of three months, giving you plenty of time to learn the ropes and decide if the sport is for you.
Step 3: Learn and Develop Your Skills
Under the guidance of your coach, you will learn the core skills of target shooting, including:
Safety: The paramount rule of the range. You will be taught the correct procedures for handling firearms at all times.
Position: Whether you're shooting prone, standing, or benchrest, you will learn the correct body position to ensure stability and accuracy.
Breathing and Trigger Control: These two elements are critical to placing a perfect shot. A coach will help you master the art of controlled breathing and a smooth trigger squeeze.
Step 4: Become a Full Member
Once you have successfully completed your probationary period and demonstrated a clear understanding of safety and basic shooting skills, you can apply for full club membership. At this point, you may also consider applying for your own Firearm Certificate (FAC) if you wish to purchase your own rifle, but this is not a requirement. Many shooters are perfectly happy to continue using club rifles for years.
Target shooting is a rewarding and engaging sport. It's a fantastic way to improve focus, patience, and self-discipline, all while being part of a friendly and welcoming community. Take the first step today and get in touch with a DCSRA club near you. We look forward to seeing you on the range!
